Shipton Moyne

Lionheart won the 6 year old qualifier class for the PAVO final and Oslo was 2nd

Gaucho was 2nd too

Rolleston

A 6 hour trip north to Rolleston on a Friday was not such a great plan but Rolleston was a fun event

Cool Mountain having his first advanced run finished 2nd

A quick departure for home was needed as the lorry headed to Stow at 0630 on Monday for two days of team training.  More sad news for the team with the departure of Lucy from the team but the two experienced campaigners of Daisy and Tina now join the team.

A clear round today saw Mac win Lumuhlen by .4

A super clear in the show jumping today produced resulted in a first 4*win for Macchiato. This is incredibly his third consecutive three day event.  The show jumping track was right up to height but not overly technical and caused a fair amount of trouble;  the two ahead of me after the cross country had 4 and 2 down respectively which left the door open for Mac.   Despite the hard grand in the arena he tried right to the end.

It is unbelievable how the competition panned out and Headly Britannia withdrawing after the dressage certainly helped.  The xc caused far more trouble than expected and to move up with a clear round in the show jumping for the second weekend in a row resulted in  very exciting competition.

My win has moved me to the top of the HSBC Rankings and with Burghley and Pau to come I have a 10 point lead;  a lot can happen in that time but the generous prize on offer at the five 4*s will add to the pressure in the autumn. ( The HSBC series is where event riders now have the chance to win up to $150,000 (£77,000) in the new HSBC FEI Classics series of top events around the world.
The five four-star events that comprise the HSBC FEI Classics are the Rolex Kentucky three-day event, the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, the Luhmuhlen CCI****, the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and Les Etoiles de Pau.
The top 10 riders at each event will pick up points that go towards the HSBC FEI Classics ranking where the top five win prize-money. HSBC will put forward a total of $1million over the next year.)

Overall we all had a very relaxing week well; being well looked after by Jane and Michael Kier, Mac’s owners.  The whole team is now looking forward to a few weeks at home .

Mac went clear xc with just a few time faults. He is currently in 3rd place. I was really pleased with how he went - the course was causing trouble generally and although he was not foot perfect he tried his best and will have learnt a lot. He finished full of running but did not enjoy the ground so I let him run at a comfortable speed. I think the fact that the two horses ahead of him are both 16 showed what trouble it caused - the two ahead of me have a fair bit in hand but behind me they are packed up pretty tight so the jumping will be all important. He pulled up well so hopefully he will be ok tomorrow. Sadly Lucinda did not run Headley Britannia but sadly the ground the ground was too firm for any horse going to Hong Kong.

A 47.4 test today and Mac lies in 9th going into the xc. I was delighted with him which was a fair mark and he went as well as I could possibly have hoped considering this is his first 4*. There are a few good horses ahead of him and he is very much in the pack with the marking very tight. There is plenty to jump on the course and it is very twisty; they have had to work hard on the going to make it acceptable. There are a lot of narrow fences on some interesting distances.  It is hard to know if the distances will ride well or if some will be on the long side and my guess is that the time will be possible but the horses will have to work hard to achieve it.  We set off at 3pm (2pm UK time)

Mac passed the trot up today out in Germany. There are 24 starters in the 4*. Mac does dressage at midday on Friday. I schooled him today and he felt great.

Zara is out of the team

Following an injury sustained during training, Toytown ridden by Zara Phillips has been withdrawn from Team GB for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

I think this is a huge loss to the British Team and naturally very sad for Zara; his injury could not have come at a worse time.  I am sure he will be back before long.  There are, luckily, some strong reserves available and I am sure a replacement will become obvious in the next few weeks.
